Amazon Prime sale boosts consumer ETF gains
Amazon Prime members started shopping a 48-hour sale on Tuesday as Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) kicked off Prime Big Deal Days, featuring deals across over 35 categories. The event runs through Oct. 7.
Prime Video will become the exclusive global home of the Emmys starting with the 2027 ceremony, according to the company. This deal is a result of a six-year agreement between the Television Academy and Prime Video.
Cruise operators Carnival and Royal Caribbean posted the biggest five-day gains among XLY holdings, with Carnival jumping 15.5% and Royal Caribbean gaining 13.4%. They outpaced other holdings in the fund.
XLY’s 1.3% five-day gain ranked fourth among State Street’s 11 sector ETFs, closing at $110.42 on Oct. 5. The fund’s performance is notable given its composition.
Amazon makes up 23.29% of the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY), ahead of Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) at 18.61%, with the two stocks accounting for nearly 42% of the ETF. It is clear that these two companies have a significant impact on the fund.

The deal starts with the 2027 ceremony.
XLY had $21.5 billion in assets across 47 holdings as of Oct. 5, with its largest industry group being hotels, restaurants, and leisure at 25.72%, followed by broadline retail at 24.49%. The fund’s assets are diverse.
Tesla also beat Amazon’s pace, climbing nearly 6% over the same five days, while Amazon shares gained 2.1% over the same stretch, closing Oct. 5 at $251.40. The comparison between the two companies is interesting.
The announcements may have implications for consumers who increasingly watch online, as the Academy Awards will also leave ABC and stream live on YouTube worldwide starting in 2029. The shift to online streaming is significant.
State Street data shows that Carnival and Royal Caribbean are small positions in the fund, at 0.89% and 1.88%, respectively, but they outpaced Amazon inside XLY over the five-day stretch. The data highlights the performance of these companies.
