Welsh health tech firm reaches three award finals

Afon Technology, a Welsh health technology company based in Monmouthshire, has been named a finalist in three regional awards for its non-invasive glucose monitoring device.
The company is competing in two categories at the Wales Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Awards 2026: Innovation in STEM and STEM Company of the Year. Its selection follows the development of Glucowear™, described as the world’s first non-invasive wearable blood glucose technology.
The device removes the need for finger-prick tests by offering continuous monitoring without needles. It simplifies diabetes management through real-time glucose readings from a wearable sensor.
Afon Technology has also reached the finals in the Technological & Innovative Business of the Year category at the 2026 South Wales Business Awards. The recognition reflects its increasing impact on the region’s health tech sector.
CEO Sabih Chaudhry stated the nominations demonstrate the team’s ambition and behind-the-scenes progress. “It is particularly encouraging to see the work recognised here in Wales, where innovation and collaboration contribute to our growth,” he said.
The Wales STEM Awards, now in their eighth year, celebrate individuals and organizations advancing STEM fields in the country. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on October 2 at Techniquest in Cardiff. The South Wales Business Awards will take place on September 18 at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff.

Glucowear™ remains in development but is positioned as a potential breakthrough for diabetes care. Traditional monitoring often requires multiple daily finger-prick tests, which can be painful. A non-invasive option could reduce discomfort and improve compliance, especially for those who find frequent testing difficult.
Wales has experienced growth in health tech startups, many focusing on digital health solutions. Local universities and research centers have supported these efforts, though early-stage companies still face funding and commercialization hurdles. Afon Technology’s recognition indicates progress in regional STEM support, though market success remains uncertain.
The company has not announced a launch date for Glucowear™, but its inclusion in multiple award shortlists reflects confidence in the product. If successful, the device could challenge existing continuous glucose monitors, which rely on subcutaneous sensors requiring periodic replacement.
