The agreement positions Ironbark to broaden its capabilities and client services, leveraging Merchant’s global expertise and long-term strategic vision.

Ironbark Financial Group is set to receive a $255 million investment from Merchant Wealth Partners. This funding will drive Ironbark’s expansion in wealth management, artificial intelligence, technology, and operational enhancements. The investment, Merchant’s largest outside its US home market, shows its confidence in Ironbark’s potential to become a leading financial partner in Australia.

The agreement positions Ironbark to broaden its capabilities and client services, leveraging Merchant’s global expertise and long-term strategic vision. This partnership aligns with Ironbark’s ambition to enhance its offerings and solidify its market presence.

Ironbark’s Structure and Leadership

Established in 2009, Ironbark oversees more than $97 billion in assets. Earlier this year, the firm reorganized under the parent entity Ironbark Financial Group, unifying its operations under a single brand. This restructure created three subsidiaries: Ironbark Advice, Ironbark Private Wealth, and Ironbark Investment Solutions.

Ironbark Advice comprises 10 businesses and 128 advisers across 35 offices, while Ironbark Private Wealth integrates Avanti Financial Group, Lifewealth Group, Mercury Private, and Paradigm Group, specializing in high-net-worth (HNW) clients and their families. Ironbark Asset Management has been rebranded as Ironbark Investment Solutions. Chris Larsen serves as managing director and executive chair, with Justin Greiner as group chief executive.

Merchant’s Role and Vision

Merchant will join existing investor Soul Patts, Ironbark’s primary shareholder since 2016. Larsen highlighted the partnership’s strategic significance, emphasizing Merchant’s long-term perspective and international expertise. This alignment is expected to accelerate Ironbark’s growth and enhance its client offerings.

Ironbark’s leadership is further strengthened by founding partners Brendan Carpenter, Alex Donald, and David Stephen, who will maintain senior positions. Steve Fort and Jason Harwood, CEOs of Ironbark Advice and Private Wealth respectively, report to the Group CEO. These appointments ensure continuity and preserve the founder-led vision that has driven Ironbark’s success.

The deal awaits regulatory clearance from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), with approval expected to finalize the transaction.

Merchant’s Australian Expansion

Merchant also made a strategic minority investment in Infinity Financial Consultants, a Queensland-based firm offering holistic financial services. Its most notable Australian initiative is a 50/50 joint venture with WT Financial, named Investco, aimed at providing growth capital to high-potential financial advice practices. This venture aligns with Merchant’s strategy to support founder-led businesses and support long-term growth.

In its full-year results for the 12 months to 30 June, WT Financial managing director Keith Cullen highlighted the positive impact of its Hubco strategy, which commenced during FY2026. The strategy is expected to contribute significantly from FY2027 onward, driven by maturing Hubcos, further acquisitions, and compounding equity value outcomes. Cullen emphasized the growing demand for financial advice and the Hubco model’s role in creating new growth avenues beyond traditional licensing.
