Crocs, the divisive shoe style, has been a topic of discussion for twenty years. People either love them or hate them, and this sentiment remains strong today. Nurses, doctors, and individuals who spend long hours on their feet appreciate the comfort Crocs provide, while fashion enthusiasts often despise them.

The Birth of Crocs

In 2002, Lyndon Hanson, along with his friends Scott Seamans and George Boedecker, stumbled upon an idea for a clog with cutouts. Seamans was working on designing this clog for a Canadian company, but they weren’t selling well. He believed the shoes were perfect for boating due to their comfort, slip-resistance, and ability to float.

Seamans brought the shoes to Mexico and asked Hanson and Boedecker to wear them. Although they thought the shoes were ugly, Seamans emphasized their practicality. After a few days, Hanson and Boedecker were convinced of the shoes’ benefits.

The founders took 200 pairs of their unusual shoes to a boat show in Fort Lauderdale in 2002 and sold every single one. To their surprise, it wasn’t just boat owners buying the shoes; hospital employees and restaurant workers also purchased them.

Success and Challenges

Crocs acquired Foam Creations in 2004, gaining exclusive rights to the proprietary foam, Croslite. As of 2017, Crocs had sold 300 million pairs of shoes. However, the company faced challenges in 2018, with falling profits and a loss of $28.3 million in the fourth quarter.

The problem was attributed to the company’s habit of selling its products at a discount, with the entire product line selling for an average of 35% off. This led to customers waiting for lower prices, rather than buying new pairs immediately. They tried to change this strategy to improve sales.

Crossover Branding and Pandemic Success

Crocs has partnered with various brands, including KFC, to create unique and often humorous products.

Crocs has become a staple in the apparel industry, with a unique space that sets it apart from other brands. Despite being considered ugly by some, the shoes have gained a loyal following, including celebrity fans. They have a strong fan base.

Regular people have also come to appreciate the comfort and practicality of Crocs. One nurse, who initially disliked the shoes, now swears by them after inheriting a pair. She said, “The golden baddies haven’t left my feet since.” The nurse’s opinion changed.

Some individuals have strong opinions about Crocs.

In 2020, the company offered healthcare workers a free pair of Crocs and sent 100,000 pairs of Crocs to hospitals to be given to its staff. With the weather warming up, more and more Crocs are popping up on people’s feet in more and more public places.
