Markets are increasingly defined by artificial intelligence, with investors seeking exposure through thematic ETFs. Two funds have emerged as key players: the Roundhill Generative AI & Technology ETF (CHAT) and the ROBO Global Artificial Intelligence ETF (THNQ). While both charge similar expense ratios, their approaches and performance diverge significantly.

Different Philosophies, Similar Goals

CHAT, launched in 2023, employs an active strategy targeting 25 to 50 companies deriving at least 50% of revenue from AI, semiconductors, and cloud infrastructure. The fund emphasizes large-cap technology leaders such as Nvidia (NVDA), Google (GOOGL), and Microsoft (MSFT).

THNQ, established in 2020, follows a passive index-tracking approach via the ROBO Global Artificial Intelligence Index. This index categorizes global stocks into infrastructure or applications and services, further breaking them into subcategories like eCommerce and network security. Its holdings include downstream innovators such as Everpure, Inc. (P), Datadog Inc (DDOG), and Global Unichip Corp (3443).

Performance and Portfolio Composition

The strategic differences between the funds manifest in their portfolio construction. THNQ’s average weighted market capitalization stands at less than half that of CHAT, reflecting its focus on smaller, more specialized AI companies rather than dominant tech giants.

This positioning has translated into strong returns. THNQ has gained approximately 45% year-to-date, outperforming CHAT’s 41.3% return. More recently, THNQ rose about 4.5% over the past three months while CHAT declined 6.2% during the same period, highlighting the active management challenges in the rapidly evolving AI sector.

The contrast in holdings is notable. CHAT concentrates on established leaders driving AI development, whereas THNQ targets companies benefiting from AI adoption across various industries. This downstream focus provides diversification but requires different risk assessment compared to direct exposure to AI infrastructure providers.

Investor Considerations

For investors seeking targeted AI exposure without the concentration risk of individual stocks, both funds offer viable pathways. THNQ’s passive approach and lower market-cap weighting have delivered superior recent performance, potentially appealing to those prioritizing returns over direct association with AI leaders.

The choice between these ETFs ultimately depends on investment objectives. Active management through CHAT provides direct exposure to AI innovators and semiconductor leaders, while THNQ’s index-based strategy offers broader participation in AI adoption across multiple sectors. Both continue to work through the complexities of defining and measuring AI investment performance in an evolving market.
